Zombies

Zombies have a rare chance of dropping a potato when killed by the player.

Natural generation

Village farm plots have a 20% chance of being potatoes.

Potatoes can be found in 44.9% of shipwreck supply chests in stacks of 2–6; in 66.3% of snowy village house chests, 74.2% of plains village house chests, and 65.6% of taiga village house chests, all in stacks of 1–7; and in 57.5% of pillager outpost chests in stacks of 2–5.

In Bedrock Edition they can be found in 49.6% of shipwreck supply chests in stacks of 2–6, in 69.3% of taiga village house chests in stacks of 1–7, and in 50.0% of bonus chests in stacks of 1–2.‌^{[Bedrock Edition only]}

Farming

When farmed, potatoes will take 8 stages to grow. However, there are only 4 distinct textures, so only 4 visible stages: every two stages have the same texture, except that growth stage 7 keeps the same appearance as stages 5–6, so that only stage 8 has the final, 'mature' appearance.

Fully grown potato crops drop 1–4 potatoes (about 2 ⁵⁄₇ per crop harvested on average) and have a 2% chance of dropping an additional poisonous potato. Potato yield can be increased using a tool enchanted with Fortune. Bone meal can be used to mature the potato to its last stage of growth.

Usage

Food

To eat a potato, press and hold use while selected in the hotbar. Eating a raw potato restores 1 () hunger and 0.6 saturation. Eating a baked potato restores 5 () and 6 saturation. Eating a poisonous potato restores 2 () and 1.2 saturation, and has a 60% chance of applying 4 seconds of the Poison effect (draining 3).

Breeding

Pigs will follow and can be bred by a player holding a potato.‌^{[Java and Bedrock editions only]}

Villagers can pick up potato items to become willing, which will allow them to breed. Villagers require 12 potatoes to become willing.

Trading

Villager farmers will buy 15-19 potatoes for an emerald as one of their initial tier trades.
